Decision Framework
We have perfected a comprehensive framework of key-decision types that fits any project or job. While no type is entirely new, neither can any be fully understood alone—each is simpler yet more powerful when defined to fit precisely in one coherent whole. Ambiguity and redundancy are eliminated; terminology is more concise and meaningful; concepts are integrated to be synergistic and significantly more productive. People can see, think, and cooperate better, because decisions control everything but luck—they are the primary keys to success.

My management team and I sat through a training class on the NineDecisions model. I felt like I was back in college—it was refreshing to look at success through a comprehensive conceptual framework. Getting back to basics really helps now and then; we gained several insights for better ways to approach our challenges. Doing performance reviews on such a solid foundation really tells employees that winning and teamwork are crucial.

1: Decisions are the quintessential control points for any job. When individuals and teams make better decisions, success is more frequent and rewarding. Teams need a shared explicit framework to coordinate more effectively and efficiently.

2: If it seems odd to build employee evaluations around a decision framework, keep in mind that decisions are the primary keys to success. At least one decision is required for everything one does, even if it has become a subconscious hidden habit.

3: While two jobs may involve vastly different decisions, this framework shows how all decisions fit the same key types; the ability to expose the full context of any decision is a very powerful tool.

Our decision framework is a self-consistent model of essential steps for any project. It is designed to be minimally complete, without confusing overlaps or loose ends, so teammates can collaborate efficiently and effectively.

What does this have to do with KeyEvaluations? KeyEvaluations uses this decision framework to help the evaluation focus on the right concepts—every part of KeyEvaluations has strategic purpose.

"Of the many models and processes I have encountered, the NineDecisions framework is the most comprehensive yet detailed and broadly applicable. I'm interested in personal and group decision-making and productivity, so for the past 20 years I have made it a matter of both formal and informal study. I believe virtually anyone who uses the NineDecisions framework will gain new insights into the nature of successful accomplishment as well as have a practical tool to aid in diagnosing and correcting personal and organizational productivity."

Participants need not understand this framework to use KeyEvaluations—they will benefit from the framework because it enables each evaluation to be based on core principles. Of course, learning more about the framework’s details and how they can be applied to daily tasks and long-term projects has many additional benefits, but KeyEvaluations itself requires no special training.

No matter how well intended, educated, or experienced team members may be, they still need to share a common “vehicle” and terminology to make progress in the right direction and to jointly resolve crucial considerations. Words may sound the same, but if they don’t mean the same thing, they might as well belong to an alien language. A car may have a powerful engine, but if it has a loose steering wheel, it probably won't get you where you need to go.
